FREE TAEKWONDO FOR CHILDREN WITH ADHD / LEARNING - ATTENTION ISSUES
At Taekwondo Cymru, we are working hard to ensure our classes offer inclusive martial arts for all. This means, those with impairments, ADHD or learning difficulties are encouraged to attend a session and reap the many wellness benefits that taekwondo has to offer.
With the support of Disability Sport Wales, we offer a safe environment for children to practice the martial arts and pick up valuable life skills along the way. We understand Taekwondo is not a treatment for these learning issues but it can certainly aid with focus, confidence and self-esteem.
Take it from someone who knows! David Howcroft, now an Instructor at Cardiff Met, has ADHD himself and gives his account below:
Benefits of Taekwondo:
Repetition and routines - movements are broken down by instructors to help children memorise them.
Concentration - children will learn a variety of stances, including the traditional 'ready-stance'. Should their attention drift, this is a great way for the instructor to grab their attention and start again.
Coordination - movements and routines help children understand an awareness for their body and space.
Discipline - instructors will offer children clear rules in the dojang. These rules create boundaries which are constantly reinforced.
Safety - taekwondo can provide an outlet for excess energy on approved safety mats. We also offer full body protective equipment including face masks. Children often feel more confident wearing these.
Respect - all children are shown respect in class - bullying will not be tolerated in the dojang.
