TAEKWONDO CYMRU CLEAN UP AT THE YORKSHIRE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Under the instruction of Master Porl Stone, eight Taekwondo Cymru players competed at this year's Yorkshire Open Championships. Not only did the team stamp their authority up North but they came away with a total of eight medals as well as claiming champion titles in five divisions.
Simon Griffiths made his long awaited competition comeback easing through the +87kg final taking gold. Sophie Adams managed to rectify her disappointing performance at Nationals by not only beating her previous opponent but also taking gold in the -46kg category. Maddie Davies stepped up to the mark after competing in two divisions and claiming two golds with various knock-out and round stoppages.
Mel Doce made it to the final of the senior -63kg category where he went toe to toe with a top international fighter and put on a valiant performance. Baaqi Abdul was doing well in the tough -59kg junior division and was up on points until he took a knock to the head. Still a fantastic effort with lots to take away.
Our pee-wee, Chloe Haslett, did well in the -30kg category demonstrating an improvement of technique, however, had to retire during the fight due to a knee injury.6 of the players will compete at the prestigious Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships in November.
